MEROMIX™ (Meropenem for Injection) is a sterile, pyrogen-free, synthetic broad-spectrum carbapenem antibiotic for intravenous administration. It is effective against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative pathogens, including anaerobes.

Indications:

Meropenem I.V. is indicated as single-agent therapy for the treatment of:

  • Complicated Appendicitis and Peritonitis
    in adults and pediatric patients (≥3 months) caused by:

    • Viridans group streptococci, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacteroides fragilis, B. thetaiotaomicron, and Peptostreptococcus
  • Complicated Skin and Skin Structure Infections
    in adults and pediatric patients (≥3 months) caused by:

    • Staphylococcus aureus (β-lactamase and non-β-lactamase producing, methicillin-susceptible strains only)
  • Bacterial Meningitis
    in pediatric patients (≥3 months) caused by:

    • Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae (both β-lactamase positive and negative strains)

Mechanism of Action:

Meropenem acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bactericidal activity against a broad spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, including anaerobes.

Dosage and Administration:

Adults:

Skin/Soft tissue infections 500 mg–1 g Every 8 hrs 7–10 days

Meningitis 1 g Every 8 hrs 7–21 days
MIC > 4 mg/mL 1 g Every 8 hrs 7–21 days

Renal Dose Adjustments (Adults):

Pediatric Patients (≥3 months):

Presentation:

  • MEROMIX™ 1 g vial with Sterile Water for Injection

Clinical Notes:

  • Studies support prolonged infusion (3 hours) of 1 g every 8 hours for improved clinical efficacy.
  • Safe use of high cumulative daily doses has been demonstrated in clinical settings such as cystic fibrosis.
